Dissolution / Legal Separation

Overview

In California, you get a divorce by starting a court case. No one must prove someone did something wrong to cause the divorce (this is called no fault divorce). You can get a divorce even if the other person doesn't want one.

You can divorce to end a marriage or domestic partnership.

In a legal separation, you stay married, but the court divides your property and debts and makes orders about financial support. If you have children together, you can also ask for orders about their care and support.

If you legally separate, you can't marry or enter into a domestic partnership with someone else.

Jurisdiction

To file for divorce in California, either you or your spouse must have lived in California for the past 6 months and in your current California county for the past 3 months.

Workshop Registration

If you would like assistance with starting a dissolution or legal separation case, you may attend our workshop. The dissolution/legal separation workshop is available to all litigants that intend to file in Yolo County. The workshop is available both in-person and virtually.
